WAEC Compulsory Subjects for Commercial Students

By taking commercial subjects in secondary school, you will be equipped with management skills, economy, business know-how, etc. which are required to pursue commercial courses in the University.

Any secondary school student with the ambition of studying any commercial course in the University must enroll, while in secondary school, for subjects such as Economics, Commerce, Financial Accounting, Marketing, Book Keeping, etc.

A commercial student in secondary school is expected to write the following compulsory 9 subjects for commercial students in WAEC: English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Civic Education, Commerce, Office Practice, Government, and any Trade Subject.

Now let’s look at the list of courses under commercial department in Nigeria and the requirements. By requirement, I means O’ Level subject combination and JAMB requirements.

Please note that I have arranged this list of courses in no particular order, so the last course on the list is in no way less important than the first on the list.

#1. Accounting/Accountancy & Requirement:

If you dream of becoming a Chartered Accountant, then the path to fulfilling that dream is to study Accounting or Accountancy in the University. Accounting is a four years course in the University.

Accountants are professionals who work with economic entities such as businesses and corporations and are responsible for keeping, measuring, analyzing, processing, interpreting and communicating financial records.

Career opportunity:

Career opportunities for accounting or accountancy include Senior Financial Analyst, Auditor, Forensic Accountant, Management Accountant, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), etc.

O’ Level Requirement:

To study accounting, you are expected to have at least 5 O’ Level credits in any O’ Level examinations such as WAEC, NECO and GCO to include the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Economics, a trade subject, and any other two relevant subjects. O’ Level credit means you MUST have at least C6 in the subjects above.

JAMB UTME and Direct requirements:

To study Accounting or Accountancy, here are the JAMB UTME subject combinations: Mathematics, Economics and any other science subject. Note that English Language is compulsory for all courses.

JAMB cut-off mark is 180 for Accounting or Accountancy, but I will advise you aim for 200 to be on a safer side.

Direct Entry requirement:

Two ‘A’ level passes to include Economics.

Note: If you are having issues with JAMB, do not forget that JAMB isn’t only available option to secure admission into Nigerian Universities to study Accounting/Accountancy. Other options include: IJBM, JUBEB, Remedial and Pre-degree programs, ND and HND.

#2. Economics:

Economics is study that deals with practical and theoretical science of production and distribution of resources, good and services. It involves collecting, analyzing and evaluating data for informed decision on economic issues.

Career opportunity:

Career opportunities in economics include Product Manager, Senior Market Analyst, Compensation Manager, Quantitative Analyst, Statistician, etc.

O’ Level Requirement:

To study accounting, you are expected to have at least 5 O’ Level credits in any O’ Level examinations such as WAEC, NECO and GCO to include the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Commerce, Civic Education, Accounting, Biology, Government and a trade subject.

JAMB UTME and Direct requirements:

To study Economics, here are the JAMB UTME subject combinations: Economics, Accounting, and Mathematics. Note that English Language is compulsory for all courses.

JAMB cut-off mark is 180 for Economics, but I will advise you aim for 200 to be on a safer side.

Direct Entry requirement:

Two ‘A’ level passes to include Economics and any one of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Accounting, Business Management, Government, Geography, Statistics, History, and Agricultural Science.

Note: Apart from JAMB, you can secure admission into Nigerian Universities through other options such as IJBM, JUBEB, Remedial and Pre-degree programs, ND and HND.

#3. Business administration/management:

Do you want to be come a successful entrepreneur? If you have the vision of minding your own business in the future, then this course is for you. Many of the top entrepreneurs in Nigeria are either graduates of Business Administration/Management or they learnt business administration/management skills from other sources. 

Typically, a business administrator (also known as business manager) oversees the general operation of a commercial enterprise. The responsibility of a business administrator include supporting and overseeing the term, developing and implementing plans, analyzing data, project management, problem solving, and meeting organisation’s goals. 

Career opportunity:

Career opportunities in Business administration/management include Chief executive officer (CEO), Marketing manager, Human resources manager, Entrepreneur, Budget analyst, etc.

O’ Level Requirement:

To study business administration or management in the university, you are expected to have at least 5 O’ Level credits in any O’ Level examinations such as WAEC, NECO and GCO to include the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Financial Accounting and any other social science subjects. 

JAMB UTME and Direct requirements:

To study To study Business administration/management in any Nigerian  university, here are the JAMB UTME subject combinations: English Language, Economics, Commerce/Financial Accounting, and Mathematics. 

Direct Entry requirement:

Two ‘A’ level passes to chosen from any two of the following: Economics, Business Management, Accounts, Statistics, Government or Geography.

#4. Banking and Finance:

One of the preferred courses under commercial department is Banking and Finance. To study Banking and finance in any Nigerian university, you need at least 5 O’ Level credit in the following subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Two other relevant subject and a trade subject.

JAMB UTME subject combinations: English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other Social Science subject.

JAMB cut-off mark is 180 for Banking and Finance, but with 200 score, you will be on a safer side.

#5. Marketing:

To study Marketing in any Nigerian university, you need at least 5 O’ Level credits to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and a trade subject.

JAMB UTME subject combinations: English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other Social Science subject.

While you are good with JAMB cut-off mark of 180, you will be on a sager side if you have JAMB score of 200. 

#6. Insurance

JAMB subject combination: English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other relevant subject. 

#7. International relations

JAMB subject combination: English Language, Economics, Literature in English and any of Government, Geography and History. 

#8. Public administration

JAMB subject combination: English, Economics, Government and any other subject. 

#9. Mass communication

JAMB subject combination: English Language and any other three social science or Arts subjects. 

#10. Human Resources Management (HR or HRM)

JAMB subject combination: English Language, Government, Economics and any other social science subject.
